Let’s say your company’s CFO video calls you on Teams. Everything seems to check out: the office background, that familiar voice, even those speech quirks you’d recognize anywhere. They’re telling you about an urgent business deal that requires an immediate wire transfer.
You’d probably do it, right?
A Chinese company sure thought so. Their U.S. CFO initially became suspicious about an email request and wanted to double-check. They set up a video conference with five other executives to verify everything. Everyone on the call backed up the story: the same accents, the same urgency, and the same way of talking that felt normal. The CFO proceeded to wire $25 million.
It turns out that every single person on that call was fake.
This isn’t some sci-fi scenario anymore. Deepfakes have moved way beyond internet pranks and political drama. They’re targeting areas that matter, from corporate boardrooms and bank accounts to courtrooms and even our personal lives. When you can’t trust what you’re seeing and hearing, everything changes.
What Are Deepfakes, Really?
Strip away all the hype, and deepfakes are fake media created by AI: videos, audio clips, or photos that look and sound real but aren’t. During a recent HaystackID® webcast, “Detecting the Undetectable: Deepfakes Under the Digital Forensic Microscope,” HaystackID’s Senior Vice President of Forensics, Todd Tabor, put it simply: “A deepfake is essentially an AI-generated reality or non-reality, similar to computer-generated images.”
The technology hit the mainstream when comedian Jordan Peele created the viral video of “Barack Obama,” which had people doing double-takes. Peele nailed President Obama’s voice and expressions so well that tons of viewers fell for it completely. That’s when most people realized how scary good this technology had become.
However, here’s the thing: it has become significantly more sophisticated since then. John Wilson, ACE, AME, CBE, Chief Information Security Officer and President of Forensics at HaystackID, explained the reality: “The thing of interest here is that the tools do evolve. It’s not as simple as ‘Hey, I just go use this one tool and I do it.’”
Creating convincing deepfakes now requires juggling multiple AI programs simultaneously. One handles the facial movements, another clones the voice, and so on. When they all work together, you get digital fakes so polished that even experts can struggle to spot them. What used to take Hollywood-level resources and weeks of work can now be done by someone with a decent computer and the right software. The barrier to entry continues to decrease.
The Good, the Bad, and the Synthetic
Not everything with deepfake in its DNA is automatically sinister.
“It’s also important to note that when you’re talking about synthetic media and deepfakes, they’re not always nefarious,” Wilson explained. “Synthetic media can be a product video or a product photo that was developed using these tools, and there are certainly plenty of legitimate reasons to use them.”
Rene Novoa, CCLO, CCPA, CJED, Vice President of Forensics at HaystackID, put it in perspective during the webcast: “With this great privilege and great power comes great responsibility. I know I’m quoting Spider-Man there, but it is a great fundamental idea when we start talking about deepfakes because it is very powerful. I see a lot of good in AI and deepfakes, and I appreciate how they can be used for beneficial purposes, but they can also be very destructive.”
Think about it; movie studios use this technology to make 80-year-old actors look 30 again, marketing teams whip up product shots without expensive photo shoots, and translation tools can make someone appear to speak fluent Spanish when they only know English. These aren’t scams; they’re just smart applications of the technology. The problem arises when the same tools are weaponized for fraud, political manipulation, or the destruction of someone’s reputation. It’s the classic case of powerful technology being only as good or bad as the people using it.
Just for Laughs? How Innocent Experiments Reveal Bigger Issues
During the webcast, Novoa shared a personal experiment in deepfake creation.
“We had a little fun with this by taking a picture from here and then throwing it into ChatGPT for the action figure. I was creating action figures and different outfits for the challenge ‘Create an action figure with a briefcase in the word HaystackID,’” he said.
Novoa also tried out PixAI, an app that can age you up or down, making him look anywhere from 10 to 80 years old. What starts as harmless fun can quickly turn into something murkier.
“If you want to make yourself younger, you might post your stuff on social media, in job interviews, or on dating apps,” Novoa pointed out.
Suddenly, you’re creating false expectations and blurring the line between who you truly are and who you want people to perceive you as. Wilson noticed something else during these experiments.
“You had to work with your words to ensure they were the right ones to achieve the desired output. And that’s generally that prompt engineering. The prompt engineering is becoming quite sophisticated, and people are learning how to manipulate the results and generate content,” Wilson.
Even when you’re just having fun experimenting with the technology, deepfakes demonstrate how scarily easy it is to manipulate reality. The tools are becoming increasingly intelligent, and so are the people using them, for better or worse.
Spotting a Deepfake: The Detective Work Gets Harder Every Day
Digital forensic experts are scrambling to build reliable checklists for catching synthetic media in the wild. Some red flags are relatively obvious once you know what to look for: shadows falling the wrong way, ears that look like they were designed by someone who’s never seen a human ear, or hands that seem to belong to different people entirely. Background details can be dead giveaways, too, especially when objects randomly morph or disappear between frames. However, the real detective work occurs in the details that most people would never notice.
Wilson explained the kind of microscopic analysis that’s becoming necessary.
“Look frame by frame at the video to understand. There may be minor skin tone changes that occur, which can be detected programmatically but are less noticeable to the human eye,” Wilson.
This type of detection requires serious technical tools and a trained eye to catch. Here’s the kicker, though: every month that passes, these telltale signs get subtler. The AI creating deepfakes is learning from the same detection methods experts use to spot them. It’s becoming an arms race between the fakers and the fraud hunters, and right now, it’s anybody’s guess who’s winning.
Deepfakes Are Breaking Our Most Basic Instincts
The most jarring aspect of deepfakes isn’t necessarily the technology itself, but how they’re demolishing our ability to trust what we see and hear.
“While we were doing this for fun, there’s a lot of abuse that can happen that is much more serious. And it’s very scary because it’s not a matter of whether it’s true. Do people believe it’s true? Do they believe that it’s you? That could be compromised,” Novoa said.
Think about how your brain works when you get a panicked call from your family member asking for bail money, or when your boss video-calls asking for an urgent wire transfer. Your instinct isn’t to pause and analyze; it’s to help, to act quickly, to trust what you’re seeing and hearing. Deepfakes exploit exactly that human instinct.
The numbers are staggering. During the webcast, Novoa shared that deepfake fraud racked up losses of more than $200 million in just three months. That Chinese company we mentioned earlier? They’re not alone. In that case, the CFO was fooled by what seemed like a completely normal board meeting with five executives he thought he knew.
“The models were very well-trained and convinced him to proceed with the transfer, which cost the company $25 million. That’s some very real and significant impact,” Wilson said.
Deepfakes wreak more than financial damage. This technology is attacking something more fundamental—our basic ability to believe our own senses.
Fighting Fire with Fire: The Battle Against Synthetic Deception
The fight against deepfakes has evolved into a technological arms race, with forensic experts utilizing emerging technology to detect AI-generated fakes.
“We have some great tools, and we are also using AI to help us. We start examining pixelation, shading, and other aspects. We talked about compression. Why is that important? When we see the original video with multiple compressions, that means things have changed. It’s been re-saved,” Novoa said.
Digital forensic investigators are getting deep into the technical DNA of digital files, analyzing how many times a video has been compressed, verifying if the metadata story adds up, and tracing the chain of custody from creation to the courtroom. However, even completely legitimate content can get mangled along the way. Upload an untouched photo to social media, and the platform automatically compresses, crops, or tweaks the colors, making it harder to verify later.
“The authenticity is no longer assumed,” Wilson explained during the webcast.
“You have to educate your legal teams. You have to educate your investigators, the people doing the work, the ones who are boots on the ground,” Wilson advised. “Then, they can move that process forward for determining if they are dealing with real or fake evidence.”
Fighting deepfakes requires building multiple layers of defense that work together. Both organizations and individuals need to get creative about protecting themselves from synthetic deception. Alongside all the AI-powered detection tools, Wilson suggested something refreshingly old-school.
“Have your family and friends create a deepfake password. That way, if someone asks for a key action or information, you can respond with, ‘Hey, what’s the deepfake password?’ It allows you to verify that the person is who they claim to be,” he said.
It’s two-factor authentication for your personal relationships. This approach works because deepfakes, no matter how sophisticated, can only operate with information that’s already publicly available. They can mimic your voice from YouTube videos, copy your mannerisms from social media posts, or even replicate your appearance from photos. But they can’t read your mind or access private conversations you’ve never recorded.
Companies are starting to implement similar verification protocols for high-stakes situations—such as code words for wire transfers, callback procedures for urgent requests, or mandatory in-person confirmation for major decisions. It might seem paranoid now, but when a single fake video call can cost you millions of dollars, a little paranoia goes a long way.
The New Reality: When Your Eyes and Ears Can’t Be Trusted
We’ve reached an interesting turning point in human history. For thousands of years, “seeing is believing” was pretty much the gold standard for truth. Now, that’s out the window. Deepfakes have turned our most basic instincts—trusting what we see and hear—into potential liabilities.
The rise of deepfakes makes one thing clear: traditional approaches to digital evidence are no longer enough. What once could be verified by simple observation now requires forensic rigor, specialized tools, and expert analysis. Organizations across industries are beginning to recognize that synthetic media is not just a passing concern; it poses a structural risk to litigation, compliance, and governance. Verifying authenticity is now as critical as finding relevance.
That’s why the future of defending against synthetic threats won’t come from technology alone, but from a trusted framework that combines forensic expertise, legal defensibility, and practical strategies to combat deepfakes.
The technology isn’t going anywhere. If anything, it’s getting better, faster, and more accessible every month. The real race now is whether we can evolve our defenses and our thinking quickly enough to stay ahead of the fakes. Because somewhere out there, someone is probably setting up another “board meeting” right now, and $25 million is just the beginning of what we could lose if we don’t figure this out fast.
