Job Description
The Director of Forensics is responsible for the tactical, day-to-day management of the forensics group. This role requires leadership, subject matter expertise, and the ability to manage a diverse team across multiple forensic functions.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Supervise Senior Forensic Consultants, Forensic Analysts, Forensic Technicians, and Forensic Project Managers.
- Review job board and utilization reports; allocate resources accordingly.
- Attend client kickoff, status, and scoping meetings to provide expertise.
- Perform quality control to ensure defensible reporting and status updates.
- Enforce forensic protocols (e.g., collection tracking, time entries, SOP compliance).
- Create, edit, and contribute technical content to forensic reports.
- Occasionally, perform forensic consulting duties to meet client demands.
- Track and log time promptly for billing purposes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience.
- Minimum 7 years in legal, forensic, or litigation support roles.
- Minimum 7 years in forensic service bureau environments.
- Minimum 5 years in personnel management, especially in remote settings.
- Technical proficiency with desktops, laptops, servers, and enterprise systems.
- Understanding of Windows, Apple OSX file systems, and RAID (0, 1, 5).
- Experience with smartphones and mainstream forensic tools (e.g., Axiom, Encase, FTK, IEF, Cellebrite, Oxygen).
- Capable of explaining complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences.
- Effective at juggling multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Certified (e.g., ENCE, CCE, CFCE) preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Civil litigation and billable hour experience.
- Expert witness and investigative experience.
- Public speaking at conferences/tradeshows.
- Computer science degree.
- Forensic experience with Mac, Linux, UNIX.
- Proficiency in Office 365 and eDiscovery workflows.
- Experience with security log analysis and Python/CLI scripting.
Additional Notes
The Director of Forensics is primarily focused on team leadership, mentorship, and management. While occasionally functioning as a Senior Forensic Consultant, this is a secondary responsibility and should be reserved for exceptional situations.
