Job Title: Director of Data Engineering
Location: Remote
Position Type: Full-time, Exempt

We are seeking a strategic and results-oriented Director of Data Engineering to lead our talented engineering team. This is a high-impact, client-facing role that serves as the critical bridge between our internal/external customers and our technical capabilities.

You will be responsible for the entire data lifecycle—from consulting with clients to understand their objectives, to designing and presenting scalable solutions, to leading your team in executing those decisions. You will collaborate closely with our Data Science, Product, and Operations teams to build and maintain a secure, efficient, and robust data infrastructure that directly fulfills our clients’ objectives.

The ideal candidate is both a strong people manager and a deep technical expert, capable of mentoring a team while also architecting high-level solutions across a wide range of IT and database systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the Data Engineering team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary technical point of contact for internal teams and external clients. Lead requirements-gathering sessions, manage expectations, and translate complex business needs into clear technical specifications.
  • Solution Architecture: Design, architect, and present a range of data solutions, database models, and ETL/ELT pipelines, clearly articulating the trade-offs and benefits of each option.
  • Project Execution: Oversee the end-to-end delivery of data engineering projects, ensuring they are completed quickly, efficiently, and securely.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the Data Science team to build and support data infrastructure for analytics, reporting, and machine learning initiatives.
  • Governance & Security: Develop and enforce data governance, data quality, and security best practices to protect sensitive client information.
  • Technical Strategy: Maintain a broad knowledge of modern IT and database systems, evaluating new technologies and methodologies to enhance our team’s capabilities and efficiency.

Qualifications

Base Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, database architecture, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role managing, mentoring, and developing a technical team.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining large-scale data warehouses, data lakes, and production-level data pipelines.
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of a wide range of database systems (e.g., relational databases like MSSQL or PostgreSQL, NoSQL databases, and columnar stores).
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with a proven ability to interface directly with clients and explain complex technical subjects to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the legal technology (LegalTech) sector or handling legal-specific data (e.g., eDiscovery, litigation data, contract analytics).
  • Extensive experience with at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and its data services (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, AWS Glue, Redshift, BigQuery).
  • Hands-on experience with the modern data stack (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, dbt).
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of data security and privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical field.
